Kelly & Dan’s Boot-Stompin’ Wedding at Perona Farms

featured

Kelly and Dan are two of the most down-to-earth, fun people we have had the pleasure of photographing. When they told us they were planning their big day at Perona Farms, we knew it was a match made in heaven. They wanted a day that reflected their “Cowboy Boots & Beer” lifestyle—unpretentious, high-energy, and centered on family. They settled on Perona because it offered that rare mix of rustic soul and high-end service that allowed them to truly let loose and enjoy the ride.

Wondering what your wedding photos might look like at Perona Farms in Andover, NJ? The simplest answer is: the perfect duet of nostalgic charm and modern, boot-stomping fun. Whether you’re leaning into the rustic Barn vibes or the industrial-chic Refinery, Perona Farms provides a timeless New Jersey backdrop that feels both expansive and intimate. Let’s dive into some real-life sample wedding photos from Kelly and Dan’s gallery below!

Getting Ready & First Look at Perona Farms

From the moment Nick and I stepped onsite at Perona Farms in Andover, we were wrapped in its delightful country embrace. The gals were definitely feeling that energy as they got ready in the bridal suite. Perona is a photographer’s dream; the natural light flooding in through the windows hits the warm wood paneling, creating a glow that is both rustic and high-end. It perfectly complemented Kelly’s “boot-stompin’” aesthetic.

Pro Photography Tip: When shooting in the Perona Barn suites, try positioning your subjects diagonally to the large windows. The wood paneling can soak up a lot of light, so using that window as a directional key light helps pop the subject off the darker background, creating that moody, “fine-art rustic” look.

For their first look, Kelly and Dan opted for a more serene setting. We headed outside to the Perona Farms lakefront. New Jersey mornings can be unpredictable, but we got lucky—the morning fog was still clinging to the water, creating the softest, most gorgeous natural diffusion we could have asked for. As they met by the water’s edge, the world seemed to go quiet. Watching their faces light up as they saw each other for the first time was a highlight of the day. The mist acted like a giant softbox, making their skin tones look incredible and giving the photos a nostalgic, almost ethereal feel.

Tips for your Perona Farms First Look: If the fog isn’t playing along, the weeping willows near the water offer fantastic “peek-a-boo” framing for first-look shots. If you want a bit more drama, walking across the small bridge to the island provides a clear, unobstructed background that keeps the focus entirely on the couple. Because of the surrounding trees, the “golden hour” here starts a bit earlier than your weather app might say. We always recommend starting portraits about 20 minutes ahead of schedule to catch that perfect light before it dips behind the tree line.

Wedding Portraits at Perona Farms

When it came time for portraits, we really wanted to lean into the diversity that Perona Farms offers. On this particular day we ended up having only about 15 minutes of outside time before it started to rain, but at Perona Farms that was no problem at all because there are simply so many options for spots to shoot, whether outdoors or indoors.

We started by exploring the orchard at Perona Farms, where the rows of trees provide these incredible natural leading lines that draw all the focus straight to the couple. Kelly and Dan were total naturals. Whether they were sharing a quiet moment under the canopy or catching that “golden hour” glow, the orchard provided that soft, organic “country embrace” they love.

We then transitioned to the more structured elements of the property. The island bridge is a must-use spot; it offers a clean, unobstructed background that let Kelly’s dress and Dan’s classic look really pop against the water.

But for the true “modern” side of the duet, we headed toward The Refinery. We are obsessed with the architectural lines of this space. The industrial-chic steel and glass contrast beautifully with the softness of a wedding gown. One of our favorite shots of the day (featured below!) was utilizing the moody, dramatic indoor lighting—those hanging Edison bulbs created a cinematic, high-fashion vibe that Kelly and Dan absolutely crushed.

Pro Photography Tips for Perona Portraits:

  • The Orchard “Sweep”: If you’re shooting in the orchard, bring a long lens (like an 85mm or 200mm). This compresses the rows of trees and makes the “greenery” look lush and infinite behind your couple.
  • Refinery Reflections: Don’t be afraid of the glass at The Refinery. We love using the large windows to catch reflections of the surrounding trees, blending the industrial and natural worlds in one frame.
  • The Night-Cap Shot: Perona has beautiful exterior lighting on their buildings. If you have 5 minutes to spare during the reception, sneak back out to the bridge or the Refinery entrance for a dramatic, backlit “end of the night” portrait.

Wedding Ceremony Photos at Perona Farms

There is something undeniably sacred about a ceremony held within the timber-framed walls of The Barn at Perona Farms. For Kelly and Dan, this was where the “nostalgic charm” of their day truly took center stage. As they stood under the floral arch, surrounded by the warm, amber glow of the wood, you could feel the history of the space wrapping around them.

Nick and I always find that ceremonies in The Barn have a unique acoustic and visual intimacy, even with a full house of guests. Capturing Kelly and Dan’s vows meant balancing the grand scale of that iconic vaulted ceiling with the tiny, quiet moments like the way Dan looked at her through the candlelight.

Indoor ceremonies at Perona Farms can be a lighting challenge, but for us, it’s where the magic happens. The deep wood tones absorb a lot of light, which actually helps create that cinematic, high-contrast look you see in these samples. We focused on utilizing the existing chandeliers and supplemental warm lighting to ensure the couple popped against the darker, moody background of the rafters.

Pro Photography Tip: When shooting a ceremony in The Barn, don’t fight the shadows. Embrace them! We love using a wide-angle lens (like a 24mm or 35mm) to capture the full height of the ceiling. It provides a sense of place that you just can’t get at any other New Jersey venue. Also, keep an eye on your white balance; the wood can pull very orange, so “dialing in” a custom Kelvin temperature helps keep skin tones looking natural.

Wedding Reception Photos at Perona Farms

This is the moment those cowboy boots finally hit the dance floor! If the ceremony at The Barn at Perona Farms is about “nostalgic charm,” the reception is 100% about the fun. From the moment Kelly and Dan made their grand entrance, the energy shifted into high gear.

One of our favorite things about a Perona Barn reception is how the space transforms. The same timber walls that felt intimate during the vows suddenly feel like the ultimate rustic club once the party lights kick in. We captured everything from the heartfelt parent dances under the glow of the chandelier to the high-energy “beer-in-hand” moments that defined Kelly and Dan’s celebration.

Lighting the Party in a Rustic Space

Receptions in The Barn are all about atmosphere. As photographers, we love working with the warm, ambient uplighting that accentuates the architectural ribs of the ceiling. It creates a deep, multi-dimensional background for dance floor action shots. Whether it was guests getting wild (see the “human binoculars” shot below!) or the quiet romance of the couple’s first dance, the lighting here provides a dramatic, high-energy backdrop that looks incredible in photos.

Pro Photography Tip: The Barn features very high, dark ceilings, which means you can’t easily “bounce” a flash. To keep the photos looking natural and three-dimensional, we recommend using off-camera flash placed in the corners of the room. This “backlights” the dancers and keeps the texture of the wood grain visible, rather than washing everything out with a harsh, front-facing flash.

About Perona Farms in Andover, NJ

The History & Setting

Perona Farms isn’t just a venue; it’s a Sussex County landmark with a story that’s as rich as their famous smoked salmon. Family-owned since 1917, it started as a humble dairy farm and boarding house for Emil Perona’s theater friends from New York City.

Today, that same spirit of hospitality is carried on by the fourth and fifth generations of the Avondoglio family. When you walk the 57-acre property, you aren’t just at a wedding factory—you’re at a home. You can feel that history in the grain of the original wood and see it in “Emil’s Bridge,” the small wooden crossing leading to the lake’s island.

The Spaces: Three Distinct Vibes

Perona is unique because it offers three completely separate venues on one property, each with its own entrance and personality:

  • The Barn: This is the heart of the estate. Originally built in the 1930s, it’s the quintessential “rustic-elegant” space. With its iconic silos and soaring vaulted ceilings, it’s perfect for the couple that wants a warm, authentic farmhouse feel without sacrificing modern luxuries like AC and top-tier service.
  • The Refinery: For the couple that wants a “Soho-meets-NJ” vibe. Reimagined in 2020, this space is all industrial chic—think exposed white-washed brick, steel beams, and a retractable glass roof in the atrium that makes for incredible, rain-proof ceremony lighting.
  • The Reserve: Recently renovated for the 2025/2026 season, The Reserve has been transformed into a Tuscan-inspired villa. It features organic textures, a dramatic rotunda entrance with an olive tree, and a retractable roof system. It’s sophisticated, airy, and perfect for larger celebrations (up to 275 guests).

Our Take: Food & Photography Logistics

As photographers, we see a lot of “behind the scenes,” and we can tell you: the staff at Perona operate with the precision of a Swiss watch. They treat vendors like family, which makes our job (and your timeline!) run so much smoother.

  • The Food: It’s legendary for a reason. Their on-site smokehouse produces the world-renowned Perona Farms Smoked Salmon—if it’s on your menu, consider your guests happy. Plus, they use fresh ingredients from their on-site greenhouse.
  • Pro Tip: Don’t skip the “hot bag of donuts” at the end of the night. It’s the ultimate parting gift for your guests as they head to the shuttles!
  • Photo Ops: Because the staff staggers the weddings so perfectly, you never feel like you’re “bumping into” another bridal party. You have access to the orchard, the lake, and the gardens regardless of which room you book.

Comparing Perona Farms to Other NJ Wedding Venues?

If you’re scouting venues in Northern New Jersey, chances are your short-list includes a few of Perona’s neighbors. While we love shooting across all of Sussex County, here is how Perona Farms stacks up against some of our other favorite spots:

Perona Farms vs. Bear Brook Valley (Newton, NJ)

Both venues excel at that “refined rustic” vibe, but the experience is different.

  • The Vibe: Bear Brook Valley is famously a “one-wedding-per-day” venue with a heavy focus on its heart-shaped pond and vineyard. It feels like a private, modern mountain club. Perona Farms, while hosting multiple weddings, feels more like a historic estate with three very distinct architectural personalities (Barn, Refinery, Reserve).
  • For Photographers: Bear Brook has incredible, manicured trails. Perona offers more “variety” in one spot—you can get orchard, lake, and industrial-chic photos all within a 5-minute walk.

Perona Farms vs. Ballyowen Golf Club (Hamburg, NJ)

This is a battle of the landscapes!

  • The Vibe: Ballyowen at Crystal Springs Resort is inspired by the Celtic highlands—lots of rolling hills and heather. It’s perfect for the “destination” feel without leaving NJ. Perona Farms is much more woodsy and garden-centric.
  • The Shot: If you want that vast “open sky” look, Ballyowen is king. If you want the cozy, timber-framed “Barn” aesthetic or the moody “Refinery” lighting we used for Kelly and Dan, Perona is the clear winner.

Perona Farms vs. Farmstead Golf & Country Club (Lafayette, NJ)

  • The Vibe: Farmstead is a great “classic” rustic option with a beautiful gazebo and a cozy, traditional feel. However, Perona Farms (especially The Refinery and the newly renovated Reserve) leans much more “luxe” and modern in its amenities and design.
  • The Food: Farmstead is fantastic, but Perona’s on-site smokehouse and legendary menu are hard to beat if food is your top priority.
